The Curriculum

OUR CURRICULUM

We aim to provide children with a rich, inspiring and stimulating curriculum that fully prepares them for their life beyond school.  Most subjects are taught through a theme, such as “when is a wood a forest?”  Each topic begins with a “hook” – a stimulus to engage the children and encourage student dialogue. Past examples of these include:  Roman Soldier visit; Earthquake Scenario in the classroom; Visit to the Space Centre. We also aim to produce an “End Product “– an opportunity for children to share their learning. Past examples of End Products have been a book to share with another class; an exhibition of work in the hall; a special assembly; a power point presentation; a film of a reconstruction of a historical event.

As well as imparting subject knowledge, we aim to prepare our children to be life- long learners by teaching them skills to prepare for life in the modern world. We encourage good manners, perseverance, responsibility, diligence, respect for all people and enthusiasm.

We supplement our work in the classroom with a range of educational visits, these are usually based on the topic of the term and are used to support, assist and stimulate learning.  Residential Trips are also offered in Key Stage 2, these allow children to visit new places, experience new things and continue to develop as individuals.

We offer many extra -curricular clubs to create,  sustain and develop children’s interests.  These clubs are offered at either lunchtime or after school.  Some of our children in Year 6 train as Young Leaders and run lunchtime clubs for the younger children.

We are linked to St Leonard’s church and the children regularly have collective worships in school, led by the Rev Sue Burchill, and visit the church as a part of RE Lessons, special services and worship.

We follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years and Foundation Stage (2014), the National Curriculum (2014) and the Oxfordshire Religious Education Syllabus (2015-20)
